29th January - Ffos Llas
Republican showed real guts when winning at Taunton last time out but I do think the second horse (who was favourite) ran a good bit below his best.
Unfortunately the handicapper didn’t share mine and Timeforms opinion of the runner up’s performance and gave Republican a mark of 130.
He’s a horse that has improved with racing and I’m sure he will be worthy of that mark at some stage but handicapping is supposed to be on performances not potential.
This race is an EBF qualifier so if he finishes in the first four today I might look at running him in the final but it is always a good race so he’ll need to keep improving to warrant taking his chance.
Republican is a stunning looking horse, he’s got a great laid back attitude and I’d like to think he’d make up into a better chaser.
Republican is a cheeky horse at home, mostly good to ride but he can whip around very quickly at times particularly on the schooling ground
He will be ridden by Leighton Aspell.
Republican is looked after and will be led up by Lenka Helmecka he is ridden at home by either Clare Robinson or Beth Dutton.
