Two runners today at Ascot.

12.45pm Southern Sam runs in a maiden hurdle over 2m 5f.
Sam looked above average on his debut over hurdles at Uttoxeter last month when beaten by a nice horse of Dan Skeletons.
They pulled well clear of the third horse which is always a good sign.

Sam is not flash in any way at home, he was a very ordinary work horse though he has improved of late and he is quite plain to look at.
He does have a wonderful nature, laid back and pretty lazy, he is the sort of horse that is a joy to train because he just takes everything in his stride and nothing phases him.

He will be ridden by Aidan Coleman.

3.05pm No No Juliet runs in a conditional jockeys handicap hurdle over 2m 5f.
Juliet won nicely at Fontwell last time out but I do wonder about the form, the favourite fell at the first and the second favourite was disappointing.
Juliet is due to go up by 13lbs for that win, which seems harsh in the circumstances.
She is running here under a penalty before her new mark kicks in.

It does annoy me when a horse that has been campaigned honestly can go up by so much for winning a very average race.

Juliet is a straightforward mare who has grown and matured since last season hence the improvement, whether she will be able to defy her new mark after today only time will tell.

She will be ridden by Harry Beswick.

Southern Sam is looked after by Amy Deans who will also lead him up, he is ridden at home by Flora Allesandroni.

No No Juliet is looked after, will be led up and is ridden at home by Nikola Studena.
