One runner today at Newbury.

Maclaine has shown ability in both of his races to date, he was staying on strongly to be fourth in a ridiculously slowly run bumper before finishing fifth on his debut over hurdles, both races were here.

The hurdle race was over half a mile further than this and he shapes like a stayer but I’ve dropped him back in distance today because he was too keen last time and he wasn’t quite strong enough to see out that trip, that took us by complete surprise because he’s so laid back at home and doesn’t even pick up the bridle,

As a result he will be ridden with more restraint today in order to get him to relax but depending on the pace of the race if they don’t go a great gallop I can see him getting outpaced three out and then hopefully staying on strongly to the line.

Maclaine has plenty of talent but he’s a big raw horse who has to learn about racing and settle if he’s to progress at this stage, his jumping is generally good but he can look awkward when he gets in tight…he is very much a work in progress.

He will be ridden by Jonathan Burke.

Maclaine is looked after and will be led up by Megan Brown, he is ridden at home by Andy Llewellyn.
